Peer Support Project

Children and adolescents between the ages of 8 and 17 with behavioral health issues can get the support they need through a valuable resource - the Peer Support Project. The Peer Support Project:

  • Offers support groups that meet twice a month in supportive environments facilitated by an experienced mental health professional with several years of experience working with children and adolescents with behavioral health needs;
  • Provides a forum for children and adolescents to speak freely about their concerns and to talk with peers with similar issues;
  • Helps children and adolescents recognize their own needs;
  • Fosters participation in activities to promote peer collaboration;
  • Teaches children and adolescents how to advocate for change; and
  • Offers life skills education and workshops in areas that suit the particular needs of children and adolescents.

The Peer Support Project is part of the Division of Child and Adolescent Services of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania. The Peer Support Project is a free, confidential service for Philadelphia children and adolescents who are in need of or who are receiving behavioral services.

The TEC Family Center

The Training, Education, and Consultation (TEC) Family Center of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania provides support services, through the Child & Adolescent Coping Skills Project, to kids age 7 to 17 to recognize and cope effectively with mental illness in the family. These, and all TEC services, are free of charge to residents of Philadelphia.

The TEC Family Center provides workshops for kids living with a member of their immediate family or household with a mental illness. Kids learn to effectively deal with their feelings, find healthy ways to cope, and overcome stigma associated with mental illness in a positive, community based setting.

We are here to listen or talk if kids or someone who cares about them needs us. We are available to work with individuals and identify resources that are available to help families deal with mental illness.

We have a Web site, www.mhasp.org/coping. Our Web site was designed and built by and for kids. It also has resources for other family members, mental health service providers, and educators. Our site contains proven coping skills; a database of community resources, stories provided by kids, medical Q&A, and more.

For more information call 215-751-1800 ext. 229 or email kids@mhasp.org.

Children's Crisis Response Center Project

We are pleased to announce that Joanne Flint has joined our staff as a Family Advocate of the Children's Crisis Response Center (CRC) Project. Joanne joins Regina Hamilton and Kim Jackson in providing services to families at a stressful time. Albert Einstein Medical Center is the only CRC in Philadelphia that serves children and adolescents experiencing behavioral health crises.

Family Advocates work on site at Einstein to ensure children receive appropriate behavioral health and related services, including involvement of the child and their family in the treatment planning process. Family Advocates can provide immediate and short-term support, advocacy, information and referrals as families learn about and negotiate the child-serving systems. Family Advocacy at the Children's CRC is a free, confidential and voluntary service.
